Awagami 37th Annual Summer Papermaking Workshop (NOW FULL)

THE WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL

Yoshinogawa-shi, Japan. August 17-21, 2019.  This intensive workshop will cover traditional methods of washi papermaking; preparing kozo bark for cooking, cleaning, beating the fiber, papermaking and drying. Suitable for anyone with an interest in traditional Japanese papermaking. The workshop runs all day (and evening sessions too) and also includes traditional Japanese bookbinding, "Sekkazome" paper folding/dyeing + organic indigo dyeing (an Awagami specialty).  Please join us for this annual occasion and experience the joy of washi papermaking as you work alongside Awagami master papermakers in the mill itself. Space is limited to 22 people and tends to fill by March so if interested, please register early. Participation Fee

¥70,720 ¥68,000 participation fee + ¥2,720 administration fee – This includes Japanese-style 'Bento' lunch boxes each day.

In the event of a cancellation, the following cancellation fee plus an administration fee of ¥800 will be applied to the refund.

Along with the enrollment, we will book a room for you at the ABURAYA Inn – the most convenient hotel for our guests. PLEASE pay directly to the hotel upon your arrival with Major credit cards or Cash.

*Bring enough cash that you would need during the stay in Yamakawa-cho as currency exchange is not available in the town.

Awagami Annual Mitsumata Papermaking Workshop

Mitsumata (from the Daphne plant family) is a strong fiber that makes impressively resilient paper that has been prized by artisans worldwide. This special workshop covers the entire scope of Mitsumata papermaking: from harvesting the plant and cleaning the bark to steaming and papermaking. Enrollment is limited to 15 people.

Awagami has the ability to tailor make workshops for students, clubs and organizations interested in washi papermaking and indigo dyeing. Awagami returns to the September 2019 edition of Paris' most anticipated show, Maison & Objet.  This year, our custom designed booth will exude a sense of organic warmth and Japanese charm.  Collection highlights will include (for the first time outside of Japan) our natural "A-Wall" washi wall coverings +  a new collaborative Art Panels collection and a curated assortment of the mills famed indigo accessories. Creativeworld 2019

From Jan. 26-29, 2019, Awagami makes our annual visit to the worlds largest Art Supply & Hobby tradeshow, "Creativeworld" in Frankfurt, Germany.  Please join our team in Hall 4.1 / Booth H11 where the mill presents an inspirational range of Awagami Fine Art, Decorative & Hobby papers. AWAGAMI VISITING ARTIST PROGRAM (ARTIST PAYS)

Awagami offers a Visiting Artist Program for artists wishing to use the mills facilities to expand their washi-making skills and create unique washi-based artworks. Applicants must submit an application for jurying. 

 

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

Please contact us for an application form. Submit application, resume and artwork proposal to us at: hall84@awagamior.jp (write 'visiting artist program' in your emails subject line). Please be as specific as possible in your art proposal, including sketches of the work you wish to create during your time at Awagami. Also provide your website where we may see an accurate representation of your prior artwork (If you do not have a website, please send photos). The condition of acceptance may be different from previous cases dependent on factory's production schedule.

 

ACCOMODATION

The visiting artist may be permitted to use the mills guesthouse near the mill. Artists who agree are responsible for cleaning and maintaining the premises of the house. Basic cooking, utensils and traditional style Japanese bedding are provided. Artists are responsible for purchasing their own food and replacing any items used up during their stay. 

 

EXPENSES

A 'Facility' fee of ¥5,000 per day will be charged. Artists are expected to pay for the expenses of their production in addition to the standard facility fee - including raw material cost, making new tools and/or purchase of special materials/equipment. Artists can use our printmaking studio at no extra cost to make etchings, monotypes, relief prints, etc... Artists wishing to make high-quality inkjet prints can also do so in our printmaking studio for a nominal fee.

 

 

 

All fees will be cleared on the artists 2nd to last day and must be paid the morning of last day. We accept either ¥ Japanese or credit card (VISA or MasterCard) only.

 

OTHER CONDITIONS

-The working space and tools will be shared with other workers at the mill.
-The working space and tools may be limited depends on mills schedule
-Do not use materials, tools and chemicals without mills permission.
-When you need materials or tools, please fill out the request form and submit it to us.  Please submit the request in advance since the preparation of material may take some time.

 

Please be punctual for working: 9:00AM ~12:00PM / 12:45PM ~ 16:30PM.  Artists should finish their daily works on time and leave at 17:00PM after cleaning of working space & tools. Artists may work in the housing in evening.

 

AT THE END OF YOUR VISIT

If you have remaining materials, please bring them home or leave them at the mill and notify the office.  (No refunds for remaining materials).

Artist must pack up their artworks. Awagami will provide packing materials (There will be a charge for new boxes.) Shipping is handled through Yamato or Sagawa in Japan and via EMS Post (air or sea) internationally. If you ship outside of Japan, please finish the packing prior to 15:00PM on your 2nd to last day and pay for the shipping fee.  Please let us know size and weight of your package so we can calculate shipping cost.
