UNIVERSITY / PRIVATE GROUP WORKSHOPS:

Awagami has the ability to tailor make workshops for students, clubs and organizations interested in washi papermaking and indigo dyeing. We have hosted students from University of Kansas, RISD, University of Wisconsin, etc… How about your group? For more detailed information, please contact us by e-mail.

Awagami offers a 'Visiting Artist Program' for those wishing to use the mills facilities & staff to create washi-based artworks. Applicants must submit an application for jurying found HERE

ARTISTS MUST FIND OUT ON THEIR OWN COVID-RELATED TRAVEL PROTOCOLS AS THE MILL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR FURNISHING TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS, VISA'S, COVID TESTING, ETC.... 

 

Please be as specific as possible in your proposal (sketches help). Also provide a website where we may see your artwork (If you do not have a website, please send photos). The condition of acceptance may be different from previous cases dependent on factory's production schedule.  Please note, artists are requested to donate 1 artwork (artist proof) to the mills museum collection upon completion. 

 

ACCOMODATION

Visiting artist can use the mills nearby guesthouse at only ¥2,500 per day. Basic cooking, utensils and bedding are provided. Artists are responsible for purchasing their own food and replacing any items used up during their stay. 

 

EXPENSES

There is a standard ¥8,000/day 'Facility Fee' charged. Artists are expected to pay for the production expenses (raw materials, etc.) in addition to the facility fee. Artists can also freely use our printmaking studio at no extra cost (etchings, monotypes, relief prints, etc.). Artists can also make large format digital/inkjet prints for an additional fee. Experimentation & hybrid works are encouraged...

 

 

 

All fees must be paid in full the morning of the he artists 2nd to last day. We accept either Japanese Yen (cash) or VISA / MasterCard.

 

OTHER CONDITIONS

-Working space & tools may be shared with Awagami workers.

-Materials & tools not prepared in advance should be request (in writing) 1 day before.

-Mill work schedule is: 9:00AM ~ 16:00PM (Tuesday-Sunday).  Artists should finish work on time and leave by 17:00PM after cleanup of work space & tools. Artists may of course work in the guesthouse during evenings.

 

END OF YOUR VISIT

If you have remaining materials, please bring them home or leave them at the mill and notify the office (no refunds for remaining materials). Artist must pack their artworks as we will provide all packing materials. Shipping is handled via EMS or Parcel Post (air or sea) internationally. If you ship outside of Japan, please finish the packing prior to 15:00PM on your 2nd to last day and pay all shipping fees.
