Suminagashi, or “floating ink” is an ancient technique made popular by Japans' royal court in the 12th century and later used as a subtle decorative background for calligraphic poetry. The marbled designs are created by a series of repeated dippings of ink onto the surface of water. The marbled inks pattern is transferred onto washi paper in a manner similar to Turkish style marbling. Awagami Suminagashi papers are created on 'Kozo Select' washi by master craftswoman, Mieko Fujimori. Each sheet is handmade so the gray-toned patterns will vary from sheet-to-sheet. Mieko-san has 'signed' each sheet with her artisan 'hanko' name stamped in red
