In the late Fall as persimmon trees begin to bear fruit its time at Awagami to start thinking about 'Kakishibu' (natural persimmon tannin). This rich brown pigment has been used for waterproofing Japanese paper umbrellas since antiquity and these days, kakishibu has come back into fashion as an eco-friendly colorant for clothing and accessories. The covers of these stitched book are brushed with kakishibu yielding lovely golden brown patterns. Inside are 18 thick double-sided sheets of washi suitable for writing, drawing, collage, stamping, etc…. Each book is unique and can be used both right-to-left (Japanese) or left-to-right (Western).
